If your item has shrunk, don’t worry! With a little care and effort, you may be able to restore it to its original size or stretch it out for a better fit. Here are some tips to help:
1. Steam the Item
- Use a handheld steamer or the steam function on your iron to gently heat the fibers.
- Hold the steamer or iron a few inches away from the fabric and evenly steam the entire item.
- While the fabric is warm and pliable, carefully stretch it back into shape.
- Focus on areas like seams or hems that need extra room.
2. Soak and Stretch
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of baby shampoo or hair conditioner.
- Submerge the item and let it soak for 10–15 minutes. This helps relax the fibers.
- Gently squeeze out the excess water (don’t wring it out) and lay the item flat on a towel.
- While damp, carefully stretch it back to its original size, focusing on the areas that need adjusting.
- Pin the item in place with weights or pins and allow it to air dry.
3. Avoid Shrinkage in the Future
- Always wash in cold water: Heat can cause fibers to shrink, so use a gentle, cold cycle for delicate items.
- Never put your item in the dryer: Air drying is the best way to maintain the size and shape of your clothing.
- Use a laundry bag for extra protection during the wash cycle.
